Statement of YHKCC's Students, Alumni, and Staff Against Extradition Law Amendment
***The statement does not represent the standpoint of YMCA of Hong Kong Christian College and should not be taken as the perspective of all students, alumni, and staff members thereof***

Recently, the Hong Kong government proposed a bill to amend the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance and the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Ordinance regarding extradition due to a Hong Kong citizen committed a crime in Taiwan (ROC). The current extradition law prohibits the transfer of fugitives to China (PRC) due to the difference in legal systems and other factors, but the proposed bill will allow Hong Kong to establish a mechanism for transfers of fugitives for other places including Mainland China. Once the bill is passed, the Hong Kong Government will be able to use the new regulations to hand over political prisoners and even anyone to China for political purposes and the ordinance will become a tool for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to persecute dissidents. This will definitely threaten the personal safety and freedom of Hong Kong people and severely impact the rule of law and stability of Hong Kong.

Since the transfer of sovereignty in 1997, Hong Kong's freedom of speech, human rights, and the rule of law had deteriorated sharply due to the constant political intervention from the CCP. The shrinking degree of autonomy indicates that Hong Kong is slowly becoming one of the ordinary cities of China. If the amendment bill is passed, the Hong Kong government will inevitably propose even more unjust laws in the future to further restrict the basic rights of Hong Kong people. Therefore, we the co-signers of this statement appeal to all sectors of the society to join forces, to work together against the Extradition Law Amendment. We the co-signers also condemn the Hong Kong government for their disregard for public opinions and legislative procedures. Lastly, we urge the Hong Kong government to immediately withdraw the amendment.

The motto of YHKCC is "Fides et Virtus" (Faith and Strength). Our students must always uphold the spirit of the school motto to fight against totalitarianism and to protect our homeland.

Here we encourage all students, alumni, and staff members to participate in the protest against extradition law amendment, making our voices heard by the society, the government, and the world. The details are as follows:
