Open Letter to the European Commission
Subject: Germany’s plan to legalise Cannabis is a challenge to EU law and global efforts to reduce
drug-related harm.

The current governing coalition of Germany has shared plans to legalise Cannabis in the country. They are currently in the process of internal discussions and drafting of a key issue document. Simultaneously, they have started discussions with the European Council behind closed doors and are expected to publish a notification soon, to which the European Council will have 3 months to reply to approve or criticise.

As potential legalisation in Germany will not only have effects on public health in Germany but will also have a major impact on the drug policies and efforts to reduce drug-related harm in other European countries, we, together with other organisations, have written a letter directed to the European Commission. The letter shares our concerns and urges for opposition to the German legalisation plans and a continuation of a multilateral approach to the world drug problem.
