Where is the church? This is an outcry heard from many of us youth and young adults. What is the church, the mosque, the synagogue doing about the racial injustice happening in our nation? What is the connection between faith and justice? These are questions that many young Black people are asking of faith leaders in this time of racial, economic and political revolution. Many young Black Christians, Muslims and Jews have a deep passion to pursue social justice through their faith and use their voices to advocate for the issues that affect them and their communities. However, there are not enough spaces or people to help them cultivate these passions.
Salvation and Social Justice, rooted in the Black Freedom Church tradition, is focused on abolition, transformation and liberation. We work for this through coalition organizing and a drawing from the prophetic tradition. Do you want to be in a space where faith and movement ignite for social change and liberation? Then, apply ASAP.
The Youth Coalition at Salvation and Social Justice aims to prophetically educate, cultivate, develop and equip the youth in Black faith spaces to establish a learning community that fosters effective and sustainable youth leadership to transform our society. It also serves as an institute of advocacy for Black youth to mobilize, organize, actively participate, and lead conversations and efforts regarding issues that affect them, their families and communities. Joining the Youth Coalition is a yearlong commitment. You must be between the ages (15-17) and (18-25). Our three focus areas of advocacy are Education, Healthcare, and the Criminalization of Black Youth. We will be holding bi-weekly meetings where the young people would be able to build relationships with each other, receive mentorship, experience personal and professional development, be exposed to advocacy trainings, expand their networks, plan and executive strategies to address social justice issues. These meetings will be held virtually on zoom due to social distancing procedures.
