The 2023–24 Science Olympiad Urban Schools Initiative (Sci Oly USI), sponsored by The Aerospace Corporation, is starting soon! This is a protected, sandboxed competition for
first-time middle school Science Olympiad competitors in the Southern California region. Teams will meet from January until April 2024 in preparation for an in-person finals competition held at the University of California, Los Angeles. This is a one-day competition, scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 20, 2024, from 8:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m., with a lunch break from 12:15 p.m.–1:30 p.m. If you are interested in participating, please complete this interest form by Thursday, February 15, 2023.
Participating schools agree to:
- Field a team of up to 10 interested students.
- Hold regular team meetings/practices from February through April 2024
- Participate in the in-person Science Olympiad tournament.
- Pay your school or district’s standard club stipend to a faculty member to serve as the team coach, if applicable.
Participating schools will receive:
- Complimentary registration to the Urban School Initiatives Tournament hosted at UCLA by the Southern California Science Olympiad in partnership with the Aerospace Corporation.
- The competition guidelines, events, and rules for the 2023-2024 season can be downloaded online at soinc.org/rules-2024.
- Mentoring led by UCLA students, and mentorship and career talks by Aerospace volunteers and Science Olympiad experts.
- An introduction to a peer network of STEM-focused teachers.
