"The Death of a Beautiful Woman", Flash fiction and poetry inspired by the real and imagined loves of Edgar Allan Poe.

Edgar Allan Poe famously wrote, "The death [of] a beautiful woman is, unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world — and equally is it beyond doubt that the lips best suited for such a topic are those of a bereaved lover." Poe had ample experience from his own life to form this opinion, and explored it most famously in immortal works such as "The Raven," "Ligeia," "Annabel Lee," and others.

In this new flash fiction and poetry series, The Edgar Allan Poe House & Museum invites lovers everywhere to create *their own* pieces inspired by the real or imagined loves of Edgar Allan Poe. Characters from Poe's works or historical figures from Poe's life are fair subjects for inspiration in original pieces. In celebration of 2020 as "The Year of the Woman" in Maryland, female-identifying authors are invited to enter.

Ever want to tell another story about Lenore? Write a poem for Annabelle Lee? Create a backstory for Morella? Maybe compose a verse to Ligeia or even a sonnet to Virginia Clemm? Now is your chance! Female identifying writers/poet are eligible to enter in the categories of Flash Fiction (Maximum 1,500 words) and Poetry (Maximum 700 words, any poetic format). Two entries will be selected each month and monthly winners will be published in the Poe Baltimore newsletter. Winners receive a $5 honorarium, as well as the chance to be published in a collected anthology of works in this series. If the work is selected for print publication, the author will be entitled to one copy of the printed book. Publication in the newsletter does not guarantee publication in print. Copyright for the piece remains with the author.

Guidelines:

>>Submissions must be sent via this form and entries will be selected by the 15th of each month. Should your entry not be selected the month you enter, it will be retained for consideration for subsequent months.

>>At this time, only English-language entries (or entries translated to English) may be submitted.
Genre may be varied (comedy, horror, romance, etc.) Mature themes are permitted but will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

>>Only selected entrants will be notified. Please do not contact Poe Baltimore for status of your entry or feedback.

>>The 2020 series is open exclusively to female-identifying authors.

>>Previously-published pieces are not eligible.

>>By submitting an entry, you warrant the pieces are original and within your rights to see published by Poe Baltimore. Authors retain copyright to their work but grant Poe Baltimore non-exclusive permission to print and disseminate the work.
