A 74-year-old chronic heavy smoker has presented with a
several-week history of non-productive cough. The patient denies any
hemoptysis, weight loss, or night sweats. He is able to walk a mile without
experiencing any dyspnea or chest pain. The chest radiograph showed an abnormal
density. On CT imaging, the nodule measures 2.5 cm in diameter (see figure
below). The remainder of the lung parenchyma is normal in appearance, no
enlarged lymph nodes are evident. What is the next step?
