Filter First In Schools
St. Louis Public Schools are under no obligation to test their water for lead, however, when the lead was tested in June of 2020, one fountain tested as high as 822 parts per billion (\"ppb\") on a first draw sample. While no amount of lead is safe, the American Academy of Pediatrics' recommends the rate of lead in school water fountains should not exceed 1 ppb.

It has been reported by parents and teachers that the District is turning off the water fountains  or  using other short term fixes when the tests reveal the lead is too high. We propose that SLPS adopt the Filter First policy. This policy requires each school within the district to have a filter placed on water fountains or have filtered water fountains installed in schools.
