Binding Ourselves Jewish – A Tefillin Workshop
Sunday January 29th and February 5th, 12:30-2:00pm
$30 per person (registrants may choose to pay other amounts, or waive the fee)
Join us for this two-session workshop that is a mixture of text study and hands-on (pun intended) practice.
We will learn about the origins of the mitzvah to bind ourselves, as well as when and how we put on tefillin. This will be an opportunity to reflect on the gendered nature of the mitzvah, and how it is morphing these days to better fit our new understanding of gender identity and egalitarianism.
We will see how tefillin are constructed.
We will learn and practice putting on tefillin, and the appropriate blessings.
Most of you likely do not own a set of tefillin. We will have ones for you to practice with. If you happen to have a set of tefillin lying around, bring them with you.
No background is necessary.
Class will be in person, in the New Library space downstairs. Please use the entrance at the back of the building.
