SOUTH TO SOUTH CONVERSATIONS:            REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE AND ABORTION RIGHTS
The current global crisis resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic directly impacts women’s and girls’ access to sexual and reproductive health services including safe abortion services and information. COVID-19 response mechanisms continue to shrink access to reproductive services that have always been very elusive and challenging to girls, women and marginalized communities. This current healthcare crisis exacerbates the long-standing and compounded barriers and injustices that women in the Global South have long been facing. Given the history of population control and current concerns regarding numbers of persons who will have unsupported pregnancies through poor supplies of health services and commodities during COVID-19, we have to confront what this means in terms of policing bodies. This year, we have seen movements in the US lead Black Lives Matter as a response to a parallel epidemic of racism. Alongside this, the US and global organizations themselves also perpetuate systemic injustices by neglecting to address compounded global hegemonic power injustices and imbalances.

This September 28, International Safe Abortion Day, the Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR), Sexual and Reproductive Justice Coalition, SHEActs Africa and Safe Abortion Advocacy Initiative – A Global South Engagement (SAIGE) invite you to a conversation about what these multiple challenges mean for Reproductive Justice (RJ) activists in the Global South. How do we relate racial, class, power and gender issues with abortion rights? How can organic and responsive Reproductive Justice movements be supported in the global South?

The activity is an exploration and framing session on reproductive justice from a Global South perspective. We will learn from each other regarding the relevance of reproductive justice in positioning safe abortion advocacy & access to medical abortion in the broader struggle for social justice.

Join us on September 28, 2020 at 20:00 – 21:30 Philippine time | 14:00 South Africa | 15:00 Kenya via Zoom.
