About this project:
– Are you interested in researching the health behaviours of kids during early childhood?
– Would you like the opportunity to collaborate with leading researchers internationally?
– Do you want to conduct research that could make a difference to policy and practice?

Everything we do within a 24-hour period counts as either physical activity, sedentary behaviour or sleep. These activities - known as 24-hour movement behaviours – will be the focus of a 3-year PhD scholarship as part of an Australian Research Council funded Discovery Project (DP200102008). The successful candidate will support the development of a large international database known as the Sleep and Activity Database for the Early Years (SADEY). This database will provide a better understanding of the associated health benefits of 24-hour movement behaviours in early childhood. The information generated in this project is expected to inform national and international movement behaviour guidelines which may guide the decisions of parents and professionals in Australia and abroad. As part of this project, the successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to collaborate with leading researchers internationally, including Prof Timothy Olds (University of South Australia), Prof Ian Janssen (Queen’s University), Dr Esther van Sluijs (University of Cambridge), Prof Mark Tremblay (CHEO Research Institute) and other SADEY collaborators.

Responsibilities of the candidate:
In conjunction with the research team, the PhD candidate will be responsible for recruiting collaborating researchers and developing the international database, data re-processing (e.g., accelerometry and demographic data) and analysis, written and oral reporting of the findings, and dissemination of results.
Who we are looking for:
We are open to potential candidates from a range of disciplinary backgrounds including physical activity and public health, data science/statistics, informatics/programming or related areas. We are looking for someone who has strong quantitative research and statistical analysis capabilities, good written and verbal communication skills, good organisational skills and the ability to work independently and as part of team. Candidates who are currently living in Australia or New Zealand are preferred at this time.
Funding support:
The PhD scholarship includes a tax-free stipend of approximately AUD $27,000 per year for 3 years.
Closing and starting dates:
We are currently seeking expressions of interest for the scholarship. The position starting date is to be negotiated with the successful candidate.
How to apply:
To apply for this scholarship, please email a cover letter and your latest CV (including qualifications and any authored publications) to Byron Kemp (bkemp@uow.edu.au).
