We've long known that San Antonio has a drinking — and driving — problem. During any given year, drunken drivers kill dozens of people and are involved in nearly 2,000 crashes across Bexar County. Yet despite numerous efforts to deter people from driving while intoxicated, there were just as many alcohol-involved crashes in 2019, the most recent year for which the state has data available, than there were a decade ago.
We want to learn about what's working — and what isn't — when it comes to preventing drunken driving and enforcing DWI laws. Some of the topics we want to explore include differences in DWI offenders' punishment, the accessibility of effective alcohol treatment programs and laws or policies that could help keep drunken drivers off roads.
We want to hear from everyone who's been affected by drunken driving in some way, such as people who've been hurt by drunken drivers, attorneys who handle DWI cases, law enforcement officers and San Antonians who've been arrested for DWIs and can speak to their experiences navigating the criminal justice system.
