Registration: SOBC Virtual Health Messenger Training - Spring 2021 (March 16)
SOBC is so excited to bring you our second edition of Virtual Health Messenger Training!

When: Five (5) virtual training sessions, starting Tuesday March 16th @ 5:00pm –6:30pm, every Tuesday for 5 weeks. (March 16,  March 23, April 2, April 9, April 16)

Where: Hosted virtually on Zoom!

A Health Messenger is a Special Olympics athlete who has been trained to serve as a health and wellness leader, educator, advocate and role model within their Special Olympics communities and the community at large. Taking on this training is big responsibility, and requires commitment over the course of the 5 weeks of training and beyond. See below for all the details and requirements.

The goals of the Health Messenger training are to:
Train Special Olympics athletes to serve as health and wellness leaders, advocates and role models
Empower Special Olympics athletes to advocate for the health needs of people with intellectual disabilities
It is important you are able to attend all 5 sessions

Health Messengers will:
Understand how to live a healthy lifestyle and be a positive role model to others.
Learn about healthy activities that can be done at home or virtually.
Develop skills to help them lead in their community and advocate for the health of people with ID
Develop skills to lead on their teams and in their communities to help others establish healthy lifestyles
Think about how they can best use their leadership skills for action
Leave feeling empowered to lead SO athletes in health and fitness

Mentor
Each Health Messenger will need to have a mentor of their own choosing during the training. A mentor will attend every Health Messenger training session with the athlete. A mentor can be a family member, coach, SO staff member, friend, or unified partner. They will commit to working with the athlete and provide support as needed to complete their practicum. Please confirm that your mentor is available for all sessions before submitting your application.

Practicum
After completing the training, each Health Messenger is required to do one health and wellness-focused practicum (a little project putting what we've learning into practice!) in their communities. Athletes have an entire after completing the training to do this project. We will talk all about the projects during our 5 weeks of training!
