RSVP ARTISTS IN DIALOGUE | PRIYAGEETHA DIA & MARYANTO: ARCHIVING LANDSCAPE
Date: 19 January 2024, 10am
Venue: 63 Kim Yam Road, Singapore 239364
Supported by Yenn and Alan Lo Foundation

Join us for a conversation with the artists Priyageetha Dia and Maryanto, whose works poignantly capture the tensions around our region’s shifting terrains in the exhibition ‘Archiving Landscape’. The discussion will unravel the methodological nuances of archiving landscapes in Southeast Asia and explore how the concept of the 'archive' translates within their respective creative practices.

The exhibition features Dia’s video installation TURBINE TROPICS (2023), which explores the intricate histories of rubber plantations in Southeast Asia through the motifs of the spiral and vortex, alongside Maryanto’s ruminations on the relentless pillaging of the land in Indonesia through his years-long expeditions around Mount Merapi. A series of his earlier works that delves into South Korea’s DMZ (demilitarised zone) on view also proffer thought on our ever-evolving topologies. Gather insights into the making of these works, as both artists share first-hand accounts of their fieldwork experiences that reveal the challenges of access and
complexities around Southeast Asia’s borderlands.

Refresh your Friday morning with an illuminating journey through the artistic landscapes of Priyageetha Dia and Maryanto, where perspectives are unveiled, stories are shared, and layers embedded within ‘Archiving Landscape’ are excavated.

Moderated by Keoy Wan Hui.

About the artists
PRIYAGEETHA DIA works with time-based media and installation. Her artworks offer speculative narratives on Southeast Asian plantations, which she views as sites for recovering stories of resistance. Her research interests also include building nonlinear narratives through digital semiotics, migrant histories and our relationship with the non-human.

MARYANTO is an Indonesian artist who creates black and white paintings and installations that examine socio-political structures through the depiction of landscapes. His work often explores the impact of technological development, industrialization, pollution, and resource exploitation on the natural world.
