Candidate Pledge to Reduce and Eliminate Restraint, Seclusion, and Corporal Punishment
If you are running for an elected position and are committed to ending the use of restraint, seclusion, and corporal punishment consider taking our pledge.
The Pledge
As a candidate running for a local, state, or federal elected position, I pledge to lead and support policy and/or legislative change to reduce and eliminate the use of restraint, seclusion, and corporal punishment in public, private, and residential schools and facilities.
If elected:
I will support a complete ban on the use of seclusion in all public, nonpublic, and private schools.
I will support a complete ban on mechanical, chemical, supine, and prone restraint in all public, nonpublic, and private schools.
I will support a complete ban on the use of chokeholds or any restraint hold that can impact a child’s ability to breathe freely.
I will support a complete ban on corporal punishment in all public, nonpublic, and private schools.
I will support the prohibition of the use of physical restraint except when necessary in an emergency where the child’s behavior poses an imminent danger of serious physical injury to self or others, and other interventions have been ineffective. The use of restraint should be discontinued as soon as imminent danger of serious physical injury to self or others has dissipated.
I will support trauma-informed, neuroscience-aligned, neurodiversity-affirming, and relationship-based training to create safer environments for children, teachers, and staff.
