Walking uncharted territory – A collective exploration of public space in Birkirkara
Hello!  My name is Raffaella Zammit and I am a Masters student at the University of Malta. I am reading a Master of Arts in Social Practice Arts and Critical Education, supervised by Professor Raphael Vella. For my dissertation I am conducting a study titled Walking uncharted territory – A collective exploration of public space in Birkirkara.

The aim of this social practice art research is to explore mobility and public space through the eyes of parents/guardians and children using artistic methods. Together we will walk, explore, discuss and create. No artistic experience is required to participate. Your participation will contribute to an understanding of how parents and children feel about mobility issues in public space.

We will meet at The Mill, Art, Culture and Crafts Centre, Birkirkara between May to September 2023. Together we will go on four short walks around The Mill in Birkirkara, with each walk followed by a workshop. We will then have an additional two sessions to develop an artwork together based on the experiences shared. The dates and times of the workshops will be based on the responses received to this registration form. As a parent I understand the little time we have together with our children hence the need to organise our time. Participating in this workshop will be a fun and creative activity to do with your child/children.

There is space for around five adults and five children. Participation is free of charge. Once you register your interest, you will be provided with dates and times for the workshops (these will be based on feedback received). You will need to confirm your participation to the workshops and you and your child/children will be required to sign Consent and Assent forms*.

Thank you for your support in this research!

Introductions, walks and workshops
Should you and your child/children participate in this research we will be meeting for the following:
  1. An introductory meeting to introduce each other, the other participants, the project, start identifying needs of participants, and initial themes related to the research objectives. During the meeting notes will be taken by the researcher. This meeting will take place at The Mill in Birkirkara and will be 1 hour long.
  2. You and your child/children will attend four walks and four post-walk sessions. The walks will be between 30 to 1 hour long. During the post-walk sessions we will discuss the walks using artistic methods and media. Notes of the discussion will be taken. Each post-walk session will be two hours long, a total of 8 hours.
  3. Two final sessions will be held together to create a final artwork/installation
  4. A final discussion on the process, the experience, and outcomes will be held. Notes will be taken by the researcher. The focus-group will be two-hours long.

You are also free to withdraw from the study at any time, without needing to provide any explanation. Should you choose to withdraw, any data collected from your participation will be erased as long as this is technically possible (for example, before it is anonymised or published), unless erasure of data would render impossible or seriously impair achievement of the research objectives, in which case it shall be retained in an anonymised form.

If you and your child/children choose to participate, please note that there are the following direct benefits to you:
  • development of creative, artistic, reflective and communication skills.
  • dedication and commitment to the process.
  • leadership and collaborative skills, particularly through the co-investigation process.
  • Enhance interpersonal relationships, developing friendships and a sense of community.
  • Time to reflect and act on everyday life may contribute towards community wellbeing and long-term involvement in social transformation.
  • The walks, and the reflective and creative sessions will provide a safe space for community members to discuss, reflect and act on issues that impact your lives in a non-formal setting.
Your and your child/children’s participation entails the following risks:
  • walking in the area around The Mill, Birkirkara. There might be risk of being injured whilst walking.
All the participants will be asked to walk on pavements and to exercise caution when walking and crossing roads. Pedestrian infrastructure will be used where available. High-visibility jackets will be worn during the walks. It is recommended that comfortable shoes are worn. Parents/guardians will be responsible for their children’s safety.

As a participant, you have the right under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and national legislation to access, rectify and where applicable ask for the data concerning you to be erased. All data collected will be stored in an anonymised form in a password protected computer drive, accessible only to the researcher and their supervisors.
