FP Farm Summer Crew Application - 2022
The FP Farm is looking for students who enjoy outdoor work and are willing to learn new skills and engage with your community around food justice, food access, and collective leadership. Students that have already participated in the farm program are encouraged to apply, but no previous experience is required. The summer crew is a critical piece of the farm community and is responsible for completing the on-the-ground work of feeding our community. You will have the opportunity to develop skills around food production, community/collective leadership, and represent the farm by leading volunteer groups, giving tours, and supporting our Fresh and Free farmers markets throughout the school district.
It is essential that you can work well with others and independently. The work is physically demanding (you must be able to lift at least 30 lbs multiple times every day) and attention to detail is critical. We have a strong emphasis on quality at The Farm and every crew member is integral to ensuring we are delivering a top-quality product to our schools and community.
(You must be punctual and be able to work in all weather conditions. Be prepared for rain, intense sun, wind, cold and heat—every day of the summer!
Desired Qualifications
• Past or future enrollment in Franklin Pierce Farm Programming • Interest in Food Justice related fields • Interest in developing leadership and facilitation skills. Franklin Pierce School district Student • No previous farm experience is required.
Schedule: Tuesday-Friday, 8am-1pm (20 hours a week)
This crew member position is a summer job and runs from June 28th-August 26th
Compensation: $18.00/hour
.5 CTE OR ELECTIVE CREDIT MAY BE AVAILABLE FOR ALL CURRENTLY ENROLLED FPSD STUDENTS
All of the following are important tasks on the farm. To the extent that you are suited to each of these tasks, you may be asked to participate in:
• Representing the farm leading tours, communication and leading volunteers, and at public events
• Facilitating, leading, and making collective decisions with crew members and staff
• Planting (hand transplanting, planting with the Jang seeder, and 4 row seeders)
• Greenhouse Propagation (seeding, soil block making, etc)
• Irrigation set-up (drip tape and overhead sprinklers)
• Trellising and pruning (mainly tomatoes)
• Cultivating (wheel hoes, stirrup hoes, linear hoes, hand weeding, thinning, flame weeding)
• Bed Preparation (Power Harrow, Rotary Plow, and Flail mowing with BCS walk behind tractor, moving
wheelbarrows of compost)
• Harvesting (All harvesting is done by hand)
• Wash and Pack (washing, bunching, quality control, packing)
• CSA pickup
• Attend and represent the farm at the Fresh and Free farmers markets (Locations and Times TBD) Each intern
would attend the market 3 times
A Franklin Pierce Farm Crew Member Must:
• Arrive to work on time at be ready for the morning meeting at 8am sharp.
• Leave cell phone in locker during work hours (farm communication occurs with Walkie Talkies)
• Be able to maintain focus throughout the 5-hour work day.
• Be at least 16 years old
