Before and After: The Incredible Real-Life Stories of Orphans Who Survived the Tennessee Children’s Home by Lisa Wingate and Judy Christie

Georgia Tann, the executive secretary of the Memphis branch of the Tennessee Children’s Home Society, began trafficking children in 1924. Tann operated a black-market baby business, offering children to wealthy, socially prominent adoptive parents. Tann’s business practices included coercing birth parents to relinquish their infants and destroying records. An estimated 5,000 children were stolen and never reunited with their birth parents. Our guest, Carole Kenner, was only 21 hours old when she was adopted through the auspices of the Tennessee Children’s Home. Kenner will share with us the story of her birth, adoption, and subsequent discovery of her biological family.
