Thursday 13th February from 6:15pm in Swansea University Bay
Campus (B004 Engineering Central) and online via Zoom
Join us for our joint SWMA-IMechE South Wales Panel talk “So, you want to grow diamonds… in space…? – How space can be utilised for advanced material growth” by Dr. Ed Smith, the Head of Materials Research at Space Forge Ltd, on Thursday 13th February from 6:15pm in Swansea University Bay Campus and online. All are welcome.
There will be the usual free food and drinks served before the talk begins at
6:30pm.
Talk Summary: Space Forge is trying to kick-start the next industrial revolution in space, but why would space be useful for material growth? And why grow diamond in space rather than any other materials? This talk will attempt to answer these questions, focussing on material growth experiments that have been performed in space previously, and going into depth on why the environment is beneficial to crystal growth. Fitting with Space Forge’s initial focus on diamond, this talk will also explain synthetic diamond growth methods and explore the benefits that space-grown diamond could provide to materials industries.
