For those of you new to Raingutter Regatta, you will build your own boat out of recyclable materials and race down a 5" wide rain gutter powered by your breath.
Official Recycled
Raingutter Regatta Rules
The actual race will involve a set of two raingutters on tables or saw horses.
-The kids blow air on the sails of the boat with a straw to move them through
the water.
-Hands may only be used to upright a turned over boat and may not be used to
advance the boat.
-Kids may not use their faces, lips, hats, nose or other body parts to move the boat
— just their lung power!
Races will be run using a double-elimination bracket.
We will start with the 5-8 years of age group racing each other and moving onto
the 9-12 years of age. Trophies/Certificates will be awarded for first, second,
and third place, and there will one Best-In-Show award based on popular vote.
Construction rules
The boat must be newly built. As much as practical, the boat should be substantially built by the participant with parental supervision. Please see recycled boat ideas for designs.
Race Rules:
· Up to 10 Kids will race against each other at a time.
· Each boat must start with the back of the boat touching the end of the rain
gutter; the participant must hold it there with one hand.
· When the starter says go, the participants will propel the boats by blowing on
the sail with the straw provided.
· The participant may use their hand only to upright the boat or to remove an
impediment (i.e. if the boat is stuck on the gutter).
· THE PARTICIPANT MAY NOT ADVANCE THE BOAT WITH THIER HAND or STRAW AT ANY TIME.
If a participant does so, they will be given a warning and the race rerun if
that participant wins.
· If a boat gets broken during a race, the results stand. The race may be rerun
if the judges find a reason that merits it.
Races start at 1pm in the City Hall Parking Lot!
