Frequently asked questions:

1) What is Lavender Graduation Celebration?
This ceremony congratulates and celebrates the achievements of LGBTQIA and ally undergraduate seniors and graduate students. It’s an opportunity for us to thank you for your contributions to the LGBTQIA community and the campus community in general.

2) Why should I participate?
Lavender Graduation Celebration rewards you for your accomplishments while a student at Oakland. It also serves as a formal “goodbye” to the community and Gender & Sexuality Center.  You will be able to serve as an example and inspiration to the Oakland community, particularly fellow students.

3) Who attends Lavender Graduation Celebration?
Everyone is welcome! Students, faculty, staff, alumni, as well as family and friends of the graduates are welcome to attend the ceremony.

4) Will I miss my “real” graduation?
No, you will not. Lavender Graduation Celebration will be held on April 14th, 2022 in Oakland Center Banquet Room A from 12:00-1:30pm, well before official university Commencement ceremonies.

5) Do I have to be an LGBTQIA leader or extensively involved with LGBTQIA issues?
No, you do not. Lavender Graduation Celebration is held to celebrate the achievements of all LGBTQIA and ally students.

6) What should I wear to the ceremony?
Don’t worry: no need to wear caps and gowns for this ceremony!  We invite you to wear what you are most comfortable in, but you are welcome to dress up for the occasion or get some additional use out of your cap & gown, if you wish.
