Anchored in the Heart: A Retreat with Julian of Norwich as Guide
A three day retreat of art, music, lecture and contemplation
St. Columba's Retreat House, Inverness, CA
Friday, May 8 - Sunday May 10, 2020
" All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well"
-Julian of Norwich
The 14th century mystic Julian of Norwich was the first woman to write in the English language who centuries later influenced TS Eliot's masterpiece, The Four Quartets.. A contemporary of Chaucer's, Julian spent the first half of her life as a wife and mother. A near death experience during the Black Plague propelled her into a life of deep contemplation where she spent the rest of her days musing upon the extraordinary visions she had experienced in her illness-- visions that affirmed the goodness of creation and abounding force of love of the universe. Her writing is poetic, wise and saturated with images of God and Christ as both mother and father, in language that is deeply poetic and filled with tenderness.
In this three day retreat, we will encounter Dame Julian as our guide to cultivating a relationship with the Divine as Beloved . Lectures, guided journaling, soul collage, silent meditation and chanting will form the rhythm of our time together as we explore what it means to embrace and the human journey in all its facets, whether in "weal or in woe".
Kayleen Asbo, retreat director, will be joined by Robin O'Brien as they lead candlelit musical sessions based on Julian's exquisite writings.
