HIPE is a parlor game in which one person gives a particular string of letters, and the other people in the parlor try to guess a word with that same string of letters (consecutively, and in the same order). For instance, if I give you the letter combination RLF, the correct response would be GIRLFRIEND. In fact, this is a very good example of a HIPE, because GIRLFRIEND is the unique English word that contains the letter combination RLF. I learned about the game in the book Mathematical Mind-Benders by Peter Winkler, and I've written about the game on my blog.
