Don't Believe the HIPE
HIPE is a parlor game in which one person gives a particular string of letters, and the other people in the parlor try to guess a word with that same string of letters (consecutively, and in the same order). For instance, if I give you the letter combination RLF, the correct response would be GIRLFRIEND. In fact, this is a very good example of a HIPE, because GIRLFRIEND is the unique English word that contains the letter combination RLF. I learned about the game in the book Mathematical Mind-Benders by Peter Winkler, and I've written about the game on my blog.

I'd love to start a collection of the best HIPEs. If you play the game with friends and discover a particularly unique combination, please share via the form below. (Include your name and email if you'd like me to share a list with you sometime in the future, when there have been enough submissions to warrant such a list.)
