Program Descriptions
The following standards-based programs include a package of resources with optional pre- and post-visit activities and a live virtual experience in the galleries with an NCMA educator. Programs for grades K-5 are 30 minutes. Programs for grades 6-12 can be 30 or 45 minutes in length, teacher's choice. With the exception of Collection Small Bites, all programs feature 2-3 works of art max to allow for a more in-depth exploration of themes and activities.
All Grades, K-12
~Collection Small Bites~
Sample seven works of art from different areas of the museum’s collection. Choose a theme or let us select one for you.
~Custom Virtual Field Trip~
Select your own theme or topic! A museum educator will work with you to co-create a virtual experience that meets your curricular needs.
Grades K-2
~Ancient Mosaics and Early Math~
Students explore K-2 math standards in geometry while practicing observation, collaboration, and creative thinking by discussing NCMA's Roman Mosaic and create their own collaborative mosaic.
~Animals and African Art~
Discover cultural belongings in the museum’s collection of African art that tell us about the beliefs and traditions of different communities. Students examine the relationship between humans and the environment by focusing on works of art that feature animal imagery.
Grades 3-5
~Art Scientists~
Join the NCMA live from the galleries, where students will use inquiry to make inferences about art based on visual evidence while exploring science topics such as weather or teacher’s choice to accommodate grade-specific standards.

Grades 6-8
~Gaining STEAM from Ancient Egyptian Artifacts~
Through the Museum's collection of Ancient Egyptian artifacts, students explore the big question: Why do humans make? Students investigate two ancient amulets using visual analysis and 3-D printing technology and discuss how materials and technology affect culture and artistic expression.

Dive into the herstory of art through the NCMA’s world-class collection. Students learn about the creative output of exceptional women while exploring concepts of power, representation, and identity in visual culture.
~Made You Think: Contemporary Art~
How do artists make us look, think, and reconsider what we know? To answer this question, students explore works of contemporary art that challenge norms and prompt conversation around complex issues.
Grades 9-12
~Perspectives: Understanding African-American Experiences through Art~
How do artists represent African-American history and experiences? Students investigate two paintings depicting differing narratives of enslaved Africans in the pre-Civil War era and work collaboratively to make meaning from the paintings, examining a work of poetry in tandem to deepen their exploration.

Learn about North Carolina by investigating works of art and artists with rich and diverse connections to the state.

For Teachers
~All About Virtual Field Trips~
Interested in virtual field trips, but not sure what it’s all about? In this free, interactive session, teachers will experience a portion of a virtual field trip, learn about the technology needed, and get tips for success. Teachers will leave the session with their questions answered and ready to book a virtual field trip for their students. These informational sessions are offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 3 pm by appointment.
