Registration Form: Shelter Building for Youth & Adult
This spring, World Story Exchange offers Shelter Building for Youth and Adult. The idea is for a child and adult to learn the techniques of building a survival shelter, then be able to replicate the construction on their own in the future with their family and friends - backyard fun!
When: Saturday, June 11, 9:00am - Noon
Sunday, June 12, 9:00am - Noon
Where: Norwich, VT (1 mile from Huntley Meadow)
Cost: $200 total
Over the course of two sessions, participants are guided through the following sequence with enough time to practice and become sufficient with the techniques of building a survival shelter.
We start by selecting an appropriate site for the shelter. Then we design the shelter on paper. Next we learn to identify trees - we use the invasive species glossy buckthorn for the frame, and plentiful white pine or hemlock boughs for the roof. Now we learn safe techniques for using hand saw and hatchet, and get to work felling small trees. We now refer to our design and cut the wood to length. The next step is working with jute twine (biodegradable), learning to tie clove hitch, square knot, and square lashing. Now the construction begins!
If you would like to register, please fill out this Registration Form at your earliest convenience.
