I plan to attend the seminar on “"Patristic Quotations in Miaphysite and East-Syrian Arab Authors: The case of Ephrem the Syrian" by Dr. Bishara Ebeid,  taking place Wednesday, April 3, 12:15 pm EST/18:15PM CET  on Zoom.

Abstract: In my presentation I aim to examine the quotation of Ephrem the Syrian by Miaphysite and East-Syrian authors writing in Arabic, namely Abū Rāiʾṭah al-Takrītī (9th cen.), Yaḥyā b. ʿAdī (10th cen.), Severus b. al-Muqaffaʿ (10th cen.), Sabirīšūʿ b. Būlūs (12th cen.) and Ṣalība al-Mawṣilī (15th cen.). Each author considers the used quotation(s) as a demonstration of the correctness of his own doctrine. The presentation intends, then, to offer an analysis of these Ephremian quotations, and the different ways and contexts in which they were used.

Abstract: In this seminar, we delve into a seminal treatise by the Qaraite thinker Yūsuf al-Baṣīr (d. 1039/40), analyzing his rationale for endorsing the concept of abrogation. The document highlights how an early 11th-century Jewish intellectual navigated contemporary Muʿtazilī concepts to articulate his refined theological positions to both his Jewish and 
broader audiences.
