This survey is being conducted by Flinders Neurodivergent Study Support and Advocacy (FNSSA). Our current priority is securing a room on the Flinders University Bedford Park campus that will be a dedicated sensory space for all students who experience sensory overload. In addition, we aim to apply for funding so that this room may contain equipment/items that students find most helpful in alleviating sensory overload.
Sensory overload refers to when your five senses; touch, taste, sound, smell, and sight, experience more input than your brain can process. Although anyone can experience sensory overload, those who identify as neurodivergent usually experience sensory overload to a higher degree, and more frequently. Sensory overload can make it more difficult to concentrate, increase irritability, or cause feelings of stress and anxiety. A sensory room provides a curated space with multi-sensory resources which may help to alleviate these symptoms.
