- Title: Effects of Safe Bicycle Passing Laws on Drivers’ Behavior and Bicyclists’ Safety
- Speaker: Jun Oh, Professor, Western Michigan University
- Abstract: This webinar presents the effect of passing distance laws on drivers’ perceptions and behaviors when passing bicycles. A survey was conducted to determine drivers’ awareness and the effect of bicycle passing laws on drivers’ behavior. Bicycle passing distances were also measured with an instrumented bicycle in Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Lansing, and South Bend. This study reveals that drivers’ overtaking distances were significantly greater in locations with the five-foot passing law than in other areas. Roads with paved shoulders, wider travel lanes, and more number of lanes tend to increase the passing distance.
