Youth Advisory Council (YAC) serves the Office of the Mayor for the City of Ashland, Oregon. The YAC will be made up of 7 teens representing diverse backgrounds with regard to class, ethnicity, physical ability, and gender.
The YAC is created with the intent to offer a teen POV to Mayor Akins on current issues and policies within Ashland. It will also work to involve other AHS students with our local government, and create a way for them to voice their opinions.
The full committee will meet with Mayor Akins once a month for 1 hour. One committee member will be a Secretary for documentation and notes, which are provided to the Mayor. Another committee member will be a Social Media Manager. The 7 YAC members will meet once a week for a quick check-in to make sure everybody is current on what is going on within local government, to be prepared for the monthly meetings. YAC members are expected to be at every monthly meeting with Mayor Akins, and every weekly meeting for an information update and discussion, unless they notify an absence 24 hours before. YAC members are expected to actively participate in their advisor role, and to bring at least 1 action step forward for a current issue to each monthly meeting. They invest time in understanding local issues from their own and their family’s point of view--utilizing their unique background for recommendations within the YAC.
Applications are due February 20th!
