First-Year Living-Learning Communities: Leadership and Service-Learning

The First-Year Living-Learning Communities promote personal and professional development and reflection, and encourage incoming students to find fulfilling involvement in the campus and global community. The four-credit First-Year Seminar (FYS) courses designed specifically for our First-Year Living-Learning Community students will introduce you to intellectual life at Adelphi University by providing you with a learning experience that exposes you to exciting and challenging ideas in a seminar format.

There are two First-Year Living-Learning Communities for the 2022-2023 academic year:

1. In the Leadership Community (under the direction of Dr. Lisa Minicozzi), the course is crafted to further develop your already-strong leadership skills with speakers from and trips to New York City and across Long Island.

2. In the Service-Learning Community (under the direction of Dr. MaryJean McCarthy), the course will center around the idea of what it means to be a compassionate citizen with service-learning trips (volunteering and service programs) around Long Island.

Additionally, you will engage actively in residential programming to further connect your learning inside and outside of the classroom, develop leadership skills through the Leadership Certificate Program, students with a GPA of 3.0 will be invited to be inducted into Adelphi's chapter of Gamma Beta Phi National Community Service Honor Society and participate in service-learning experiences, depending on which of the LLCs you are a member of.
