Description:  A young girl takes refuge in a London Tube station during WWII and confronts grief, loss, and love with the help of her favorite book, Alice in Wonderland.

From the Tony® and Grammy® award-winning creators of Spring Awakening, Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik, and co-written by Jessie Nelson (Waitress), Alice by Heart is a touching musical inspired by Alice’s madcap Adventures in Wonderland.

Auditions/Callbacks: November 27 - 30, 2023 @ 6PM - 9PM (block schedule for all 3 days)
Rehearsals: December 11 - 14, 2023; January 8 - February 21, 2024
Performances: February 22 - 25, 2024

Character Breakdown

ALICE SPENCER      Vocal range top: D5, Vocal range bottom: G3

Full of questions, wonder, and a tenacious stubbornness when it comes to achieving her goals. Entering a confusing time of transition in her body while trying to survive a distressed situation - living in a tube station, displaced from her family. Possesses a wonderful imagination that allows her to escape her present situation. Strong contemporary pop/rock singing voice.


ALFRED HALLAM / WHITE RABBIT  / MARCH HARE      Vocal range top: A4, bottom: B2

Alice's ailing childhood friend. Alfred contracted tuberculosis while living on the streets and is now being cared for by a small medical staff in the tube station. As White Rabbit: Obsessive-compulsive, and a little manic - running from something he doesn't understand. Strong contemporary pop/rock singing voice.


RED CROSS NURSE / QUEEN OF HEARTS     Vocal range top: D5, bottom: F#3

Tough, funny, sultry, and take-charge, she dominates her husband and knows how to get what she wants. 


HAROLD PUDDING / MAD HATTER       Vocal range top: F4, bottom: C3

A young soldier suffering from shell shock (PTSD). As Mad Hatter: Manic, funny, charming, and nuts.


TABATHA / CHESHIRE CAT     Vocal range top: D5, bottom: Bb3

A dry, mysterious young woman who is mourning the loss of her sister. Street tough; a survivor. As Cheshire Cat: mischievous, mysterious, questioning. 


DODGY / DUCHESS      Vocal range top: E4, bottom: C3

A somewhat flamboyant street urchin with sticky fingers. As Duchess: Drag role, comedic chops required.


CLARISSA / MOCK MOCK MOCK TURTLE     Vocal range top: D5, bottom: B3

An upper-class young girl who finds herself in the Underground with the rest of the survivors. Wealthy. Privileged. Posh. Feels too good for the people around her. Underneath, there’s pain. Needs dry wit. Contemporary pop/rock singing voice. 


NIGEL / DORMOUSE      Vocal range top: Bb4, bottom: E3

A young boy who has been traumatized by the bombs and the loss of his family. Nervous; dry; snobby; non-engaged; puts everyone in their place.


ANGUS / CATERPILLAR / KNAVE OF HEARTS     Vocal range top: B4, bottom: F3

A working class youth with a penchant for opium and escapism. As Caterpillar: Edgy; sensual; funny; great contemporary pop/rock singing voice; strong dancer.


DR. BUTRIDGE / JABBERWOCKY / KING OF HEARTS     Vocal range top: G4, bottom: C3

Falling apart and anxious to a comic extent. A nervous yet somehow still threatening doctor tasked with managing the tube station. As Jabberwocky: peculiar, slithery. Character singing voice.
