Forgotten War Crimes: the fight of “Comfort Women”
Have you heard about the issue of “comfort women”?

It is an issue that we don’t often hear about, but “comfort women” were women forced to provide sexual service to Japanese soldiers in the colonies of the Japanese Empire, between 1932 and 1945. These women were taken from all over Asia and the Pacific, with Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, Chinese, Filipina and Indonesian women comprising the vast majority. The estimated number of them is at tens or hundreds of thousands.

The Academic Committee wants to help raise awareness on this issue - the fight that these women have been going through since the end of the war to get an official apology from the Japanese government. To shine a light on the issue, a documentary will be screened, followed by a small presentation on what has happened after the time period shown in the documentary, and then we will have a moment to share thoughts and feelings. The event will take place Monday 9th of May in Wijnhaven, room 3.48 at 17:30.

Trigger Warning: Topics of sexual violence and war crimes will be touched upon, please consider this when thinking about attending.
