Spelling Bee Volunteers
Boulder Valley School District is seeking volunteers who would like to contribute and be a part of this year's Spelling Bee at the Boulder regional event on Saturday, March 16.

Priority will be given to those with prior experience judging, coordinating, or participating in Spelling Bees, but you do not need prior experience in order to volunteer in some way. For more information about Spelling Bee, please visit spellingbee.com.

1. The Regional Spelling Bee will take place in Boulder on Saturday, March 16 at Platt Middle School. Officials need to be available to be there from 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM. Lunch will be provided.

2. There will be a virtual one-hour training meeting in February, and one in-person meeting at Platt Middle School. These will be during weekdays and your availability will be taken into consideration when scheduling the exact time and day.

3. Information on rules and procedures will be provided to officials ahead of time in order for officials to prepare.

4. If you are the teacher, parent or sibling of a student competing in the Boulder Regional Spelling Bee, you cannot serve as an official (judge, alternate judge, recorder, or pronouncer).

Please reach out to emily.cosmos@bvsd.org with questions.
  • Spelling Bee Officials: Judges rule on spellings and answers provided by spellers during the competition. They maintain a thorough knowledge of the competition rules and swiftly weigh in on internal or external questions regarding the competition.
  • Registration/Check In: Check in students and judges-greeters
  • Stage Manager: Stays with students during the event, and will also accompany students before the bee to help them line up and enter.  During the bee, they help direct spellers when it’s their turn to spell. For the spellers who are eliminated from the competition during any given round, the on-stage manager will help escort the spellers off the stage between rounds. They will also attend to student needs while students are on the stage, such as directing or escorting students to bathrooms, if needed.
