Everyone is cheerfully welcome to this Rude Mechanicals production, and diversity of all kinds is equally welcome and encouraged! Auditions are Thursday and Friday, September 10 & 11 online via Zoom. Please fill in this form no later than Wednesday, September 9. Rehearsals will be 7-10 PM, Mondays through Thursdays, although you will not be scheduled for all of them. Performances will be the evenings of Friday and Saturday 30 & 31 October - please note that this includes Halloween night.

VINDICI, the revenger, sometimes disguised as Piato. In order to revenge the Duke’s murder of their betrothed, Vindici is prepared to kill pretty much everyone. The actor who plays Vindici gets to work out over the course of rehearsal just how sane they are; as with Hamlet, there are viable arguments for either sanity or madness in Vindici. Has a death wish that is finally fulfilled by the end of the play.

I do not wish to play Vindici.

HIPPOLITO, Vindici’s sibling. A lot of their byplay is ‘buddy movie,’ despite the grim task ahead of them. Hippolito supports Vindici’s drive for vengeance, and adds their own motives: the Duke cast off their father into poverty and obscurity, where he died of despair. Hippolito is substantially more grounded and practical than Vindici, but at core, is no less angry.

I do not wish to play Hippolito.

GRATIANA, their mother. (Character plays as female and also does a second role as a reporter.) It was easy for Gratiana to be a noble and virtuous wife and mother in the days of success and plenty. When her husband fell out of the Duke’s favor, the family slipped into poverty. And Gratiana, sick of working at the bar and living in a dingy flat, is tempted to seize on her one (wretched and dishonorable) chance at winning back the glittering court life she once loved.

I do not wish to play Gratiana.

CASTIZA, their sister. (Character plays as female and also does a second role as a reporter.) Castiza is fierce and fearless, and the unwavering moral center of the play. She also works at the bar, works hard, and poverty doesn’t bother her the way it does Gratiana. At the end of the play, she joins her brothers in avenging the family’s wrongs, assassinating would-be dukes as gleefully as they do.

I do not wish to play Castiza.

DUKE. (Character plays as male.) The current head of state, and the murderer of Vindici’s betrothed, Gloriana. Very like Claudius in Hamlet, the Duke does terrible things, but fears for the state of his soul and his place in Heaven. He’s not entirely without conscience or remorse; there’s room to play this with some depth, as a sex addict driven by his addiction. He is, nonetheless, an aging sexual predator and a serial murderer of women, and if it’s played for depth and sympathy, it should be sympathy we do not give.

I do not wish to play Duke.

DUCHESS. (Character plays as female and preferably lives in the quarantine bubble of the actor playing Spurio.) The Duchess is every bit as much an aging sexual predator and inveterate plotter as the Duke, and just as willing to kill. The Duke, Duchess and Spurio will need to be willing to simulate sexual acts, and will frankly have to be fearless as actors. This is a second marriage for the Duke and Duchess, and a relatively recent one; each of them has children, but they were all the products of previous marriages.

I do not wish to play Duchess.

LUSSURIOSO, the Duke's son by a previous marriage. (Character plays as male.) The heir apparent, debauched and venal, and currently attempting (unsuccessfully) to bribe Castiza into his bed. A chip off the old block.

I do not wish to play Lussurioso.

SPURIO, the Duke's bastard son. (Character plays as male and preferably lives in the same quarantine bubble as the actor playing Duchess.) Spurio is also ambitious, resents his father for his bastardy, hates his brothers, and hates the Duchess. He is, nonetheless, willing to carry on an affair with the Duchess to avenge himself on his father.

I do not wish to play Spurio.

AMBITIOSO, the eldest of the Duchess's three children by a previous marriage. The name says it all, really; not very bright, but desperately wants to get rid of Lussurioso and succeed the Duke.

I do not wish to play Ambitioso.

SUPERVACUO, the Duchess's middle child. An ambitious idiot that doesn’t realize it. Follows Ambitioso into a number of really avoidable idiot situations. Secretly plans to be rid of both Lussurioso and Ambitioso and succeed the Duke, and it does not go well for them.

I do not wish to play Supervacuo.

JUNIOR, the Duchess's youngest son. (Character plays as male.) A sociopath and an unrepentant rapist. Think of playing this one as an angry punk rebel, who genuinely cannot understand why what he’s done is unforgivable. He thinks he’s funny and charming, and so do his brothers.

I do not wish to play Junior.

ANTONIO, a virtuous old lord/lady whose wife recently committed suicide after having been raped by

ROSENIO, a lord. Rosenio and Gildernio are the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of the play, trying to survive while juggling conflicting loyalties and navigating the plots of the court.

I do not wish to play Rosenio.

GILDERNIO, a lord. Gildernio does his best to be a decent and loyal follower of the Duke, obedient to a fault.

I do not wish to play Gildernio.

JUDGE. An honest public servant, pushing for the just conviction of Junior for the rape of Antonio’s wife, Phyllida. Small role, one scene, or can be combined with most other roles.

I do not wish to play Judge.
