Seeking your experience of wildfires in Aotearoa New Zealand native forests

We would like your help to understand the threat of wildfire in native New Zealand forests. For the purposes of this research, we are focused on forests that are primarily native (not introduced) tree dominated/co-dominated ecosystems. We are especially interested in forests with Kauri, podocarp and beech tree species. We are not interested in Manuka/Kanuka dominated stands, unless they comprise the understory of the native tree species we are focused on.

Your responses will contribute to an increased understanding of fire in native forests. We plan to evaluate wildfires in these forests while focusing on the fire hazard (flammability of the forests), risk of ignition (things that cause the fire), and the fire danger (risk of fire spreading based on availability of vegetation/fuels, topography, and weather).

We are keen to learn of your experience with wildfires in or adjacent to native forests. If you have experienced a fire in a native forest or have seen a native forest act as a fire break (where a change in fuel changes the fire behaviour), please fill out this questionnaire. Please fill the questionnaire out separately for each fire you have experienced in Kauri, podocarp and beech forests. We estimate that each response will take less than 10 minutes.

Please encourage others to complete this questionnaire by sharing the link that has been sent to you.

Your response(s) will be collated with others and only anonymised summarised information will be reported beyond the research team.
