Hello teachers!
You do so much and give so much of yourselves for our communities and future generations. One of the main missions of this fundraiser is to take the burden off of you and your wallet.
Lit·e·race·y is a back to school fundraiser running August 1st through 29th. The goal is to raise money to buy books by Black & brown authors from Black-owned bookstores for YOU to provide your students. The hope is that this will expose students to diverse stories and start conversations about race & history at an earlier age! The fight to end racism will take generations and conversations, it starts with us!
I plan to take care of the logistics, and coordination. All I ask of you is to:
1) SHARE your needs - take this survey and let me know what you teach, what books you want, or other equipment you need
2) SHARE your delivery method - if you do not feel comfortable providing your email, address, or school address please let me know how to get the goods to you in the additional comments!
Why Black and brown authors only? According to research conducted by the University of Wisconsin...
Only 28% of all children's books published in 2018 had Black, LatinX, Native American, or Asian characters.
Less than 22% of all children's books in 2018 were written by Black, LatinX, Native American or Asian authors.
Lastly, THANK YOU for all do. I am eternally grateful for every teacher I've had in my life, I wouldn't be where I am without you. This absolutely does NOT mean I support schools going back to in-person classes during a global pandemic. The safety of students and teachers should be decided by students and teachers. Please stay safe, healthy, and include any COVID-related needs we might be able to help provide!
