Below are several prompts for you to share how gender-affirming care bans have impacted you, your practice, and your patients. We plan to utilize these stories to depict the broader harms of gender-affirming care bans - that means your stories (if you give permission) may be shared via social media, news articles, white papers, and proposals.
To share your stories effectively, aim for brevity and clarity. Craft your message to be memorable and quotable, ensuring that it resonates with your audience and leaves a lasting impression. Include personal details (to the extent you feel comfortable) to humanize the story as much as possible.
Keep in mind that you do not have to live or work in a state with a ban in place in order to have felt its impacts. For those in states that still offer or protect gender-affirming care, the impacts could be felt in an influx of patients or a decrease in funding.
Here are two powerful examples:
"I've practiced as a physician for over 10 years right here in Austin, TX where I grew up. Actually I've lived here all of my life and I had hoped to raise my two young children here, but when SB14 passed, I was forced to reconsider. How can I continue to practice medicine in a state that denies life-saving care to my most vulnerable patients? I'm being forced to choose between my home and my conscience."
-Anonymous, Physician, Texas
"These anti-LGBTQ bills really showed that they just don’t care. They are not going to support our children; they are not going to support our family. And although we love New Orleans and we love Louisiana with all of our hearts, we can’t raise our children in this environment.”
-Dr. Jake Kleinmahon, Pediatric Cardiologist, Louisiana
The prompts below are split into the following buckets:
- Impact on your workplace and/or your colleagues
- Impact on your community
- Impact on you and your family personally
- Impact on your transgender and non-binary patients
- Impact on your cisgender patients
You can choose to respond to all prompts or just one - It is entirely up to you. You can also choose whether you would prefer anonymity or attribution for each story you share.
