Overview:
In India, crops can be broadly categorized into two types depending on the sowing season . Crops, which are grown in the winter season (from October to March) are called Rabi crops and the crops, which are sown in the rainy season (from July to October) are called Kharif crops. First, the soil is prepared by tilling with a device called the plough. It helps the soil to get loosened and turn over for better air circulation and allowing the plant roots to go deeper. The earthworms living in the soil make the soil porous increasing the exchange of gases and , hence, called the Farmer's Friend. The leguminous plants, in particular, have nitrogen fixing bacteria living at their root nodules and, hence, can directly use the atmospheric nitrogen to produce some useful compounds necessary for plant growth. Manures and fertilizers are the substances that are added to the soil to increase its fertility. While manures are made by decomposition of organic substances, fertilizers are made of inorganic chemicals which are toxic in nature. Crop rotation ensures that the same crop will not grow continuously . By growing crops that require different sets of nutrient on rotation basis , the soil fertility is restored. Weeds are undesirable plants that may grow naturally along with the crop. Weeds compete with the crops by absorbing most of the water, nutrients, space and light. Harvesting is the process of cutting down the crop after it is mature. Harvesting season is traditionally celebrated in India in different names with gaiety and fervour. Harvested grains are to be properly dried in the sun to remove the moisture content to protect them from the pests and micro-organisms before storing in warehouses.
