Spring 2021 Teaching as Research Institute
Monday-Thursday, May 24-27, 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM, EST. All participants will engage remotely, using Zoom and Canvas. For a portion of each day (~2hrs), we will meet together via Zoom for group discussions. The remaining time each day will include individual, self-paced activities and/or conversations with Eberly consultants (that can be completed in less than 1.5 hours). Additionally, between days, participants will also complete brief, individual activities to prepare for the next day's group discussions.

The 6th Annual CMU Teaching as Research (TAR) Institute: How to increase student engagement and outcomes in your course
A large body of research suggests that active learning improves student outcomes and engagement, yet questions still remain. Which strategies best support student engagement during discussions, lectures, or labs? Do certain approaches better achieve particular learning objectives in these different course contexts? What strategies positively impact students’ sense of inclusion and belonging or decrease achievement gaps for particular student groups? Rather than leaving these questions exclusively to laboratory research, this institute will prepare you to investigate the impact of different strategies in the context of your own course – discovering what works best for learning and enhancing CMU education. Participation from all disciplines is encouraged, regardless of your prior experience with teaching or education research. The Eberly Center will support you in conducting this work, including study design, measurement, data analysis, and dissemination. Sign up today if you would like to join an interdisciplinary community of instructors collecting data to inform their teaching and course design!
