What is D'RAP?
It is a joint initiative with the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and the Environmental Planning & Climate Protection Department (EPCPD) in the eThekwini Municipality. The Global Environmental Change (GEC) programme, which is part of D'RAP, is in it’s third phase and will run from 2019 until 2021.
The theme for this phase is “Water from source to sea” with the following research focus areas:
- What is an urban river system? - linking biodiversity to human wellbeing, indicators. Includes wetlands, buffers around rivers, estuaries and through to foreshore
- Urban agriculture and sustainable food security
- Greens spaces along rivers - recreation, aesthetic, human-wildlife conflict, biogeography, servitudes/valuing, zonation and
stewardship
- River system rehabilitation
- Reforestation/restoration/terraforming
- Rainwater/water storage/access/quality/sanitation
- Urban Health enhancement - pests and diseases, water pathogens, mental health
- Early warning systems and information systems
Each of these focus areas have the following components:
- Theoretical underpinnings for the biodiversity value chain
- Usage aspects
- Human wellbeing outcomes, indicators and social cohesion
- Policy, brief outcomes and implementation frameworks
- Existing and potential interventions/investments
- Ecosystem services Indicators
