HA Masters Team Official Survey 2022
At the beginning of 2022 members of the Masters community participated in a survey which led to the establishment of the 'One Masters' brand for which the tenets are Passion, Participation, Performance, and Partnerships.

The survey respondents raised concerns around the delivery of our National Championships.

A project brief was developed to examine the current event delivery model in terms of scheduling during the year, format, bundling of age competitions and duration of the events.

The project is seeking opinions and suggestions from 2022 Championship participants and this survey will form an important part of the process.

Q9: World Masters Hockey (WMH) schedules all Indoor and Outdoor World Cups.  The Indoor World Cups will usually be held in February/March and Outdoor World Cups later in the year.  The World Cups are divided into 4 different events by age e.g. 35+/40+,  45+/50+, 55+/60+, 65+.  WMH is encouraging National Associations such as Australia to enter 2 teams in each age group (Australian team plus Spirit of Masters team (B team) in each age group).  Occasionally there will be a clash of dates between one of the 4 World Cups and our National Championships.  How should HAMC deal with this?  Rank the following solutions 1-5 with 5 being your favourite. *

Q10: In 2022 the Championships were played in Cairns which is a two pitch venue resulting in a 10 day event with some matches being played in the afternoon and evening of the last training day i.e. a total of 11 days.  It is expected that in future the Championships will be held in geographical locations that have a minimum of 3 pitches available enabling the schedule to be completed in 9 days.  When considering your responses to this question, please note that a shorter event (8 days) means that players will have to play on 4 consecutive days without a rest day.  Rank the following from 1-6 with 6 being the most suitable length of the event.  *

Q11: Ideally, each State and Territory would enter a team in each age group.  When fewer than 6 teams nominate for an age group HAMC has the responsibility of developing the best possible formats so that all players have the opportunity to play an adequate number of matches of suitable standard.  In 2018, only 3 teams entered the 45+ competition.  Fortunately NSW was able to create a second team and the competition could go ahead.  If a second team had not been formed HAMC would have had to provide a solution.  Rank the following from 1-6 with 6 being the most suitable solution: *

Cancel the 45+ competition as 4 teams required for a National Championship
Create a combined team to compete through an EOI process across all States & Territories
Play a 45+ Invitational with the three teams playing 3 round robins (6 matches)
Combine the 40+ and 45+ competition and separate into two events after a round robin
Combine the 45+ and 50+ competition and separate into two events after a round robin

Please add any additional comments relating to Q11 above.
Q12: The playing format and number of matches for each age group is determined by team entries e.g. age groups with 6 teams play a qualifying round robin (5 matches) followed by 5th v 6th match (1 additional match) and 1st-4th playing semi finals and finals (2 additional matches) i.e. all teams play at least 6 matches with 4 teams playing 7 matches.
Alternatively for a 6 team competition, teams play a qualifying round robin (5 matches) followed by Final (no semi finals) and classification matches i.e. all teams play 6 matches.
What do you consider the ideal number of matches for a team to play at our National Championships over 9 days?

Q15: In 2022 every attempt was made to introduce an Over 70 competition.  As there were insufficient Over 70 players across Australia who wished to compete in a National Championship, this was not possible and an Over 65, Division 2 was created.  Were you associated with the Over 65 Div 2 competition? *
If No,  go to Q16, if Yes, comment on this competition here:
Q16: Each State and Territory determines the training program for their teams.  HA offers training free of charge for 2.5 days prior to the Championships.  HAMC develop the training schedule following requests from States and Territories.  Was your team allocated adequate training? *
Please add any additional comments relating to Q16 above.
Q17: During the Championships, Australian teams were selected.  Did you nominate for an OFT position for the Trans Tasman Challenge? *
If Yes, go to Q18, if No, Indicate why you did NOT nominate (select more than one if appropriate):
Please add any additional comments relating to your answers above.
Q18: If there are sufficient nominations, HAMC will consider selecting 2 teams and officials in all age groups for the next World Cups.  The second team would play in a separate Spirit of Masters competition, usually at the same venue as the first teams.  Would you be interested in being appointed to a 2nd (Spirit of Masters) Australian team? *
Please add any additional comments relating to Q18 above.
Your views are sought in relation to other events if you can spare the time to answer a further 7 short questions (about 4 minutes).  This will add to our knowledge of what masters players really want.  Your time is truly appreciated.  If you don't have time, we thank you for participating in this survey relating to National Championships.
