Welcome to the "Together in Jesus" First Eucharist Sacramental Prep program.  This program is designed to draw your child into a fuller and more active participation in the life of the Church. This means both in its life at Sunday worship and in the daily call to love one another. Your child will become one with Christ by receiving his Body and Blood. Eucharist is the sacrament that both nourishes the individual and creates the community that is the Body of Christ in the world - the Church. So let's begin.
OPENING PRAYER: Welcome to your "Together in Jesus: First Eucharist" Lesson 3. As outlined in the first lesson we will begin each lesson with a prayer. So, take a moment to gather at your sacred place or table and to recite, together,  the prayer pictured below.
JESUS GATHERS PEOPLE TOGETHER:  In this lesson we are going to read a story from the Bible about Jesus. As we read in the "Liturgy of the Word" in our last lesson, the stories about Jesus are found in the Gospels in the Bible. The Gospels were written by four of Jesus' followers; Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

The reading for this lesson is taken from the Gospel of Luke. At Mass, we hear stories about Jesus during the part of the Mass known as the "Liturgy of the Word." When we read these stories about Jesus, we are reminded that He is the one who brings us together.

So, let's look at the cover page of your Lesson 3 and read the story from the Bible, "Zacchaeus Welcomes Jesus." When you are done reading, locate your sticker of Jesus and place it in the appropriate spot, then answer the questions below.
What was Zacchaeus' job? *
Zacchaeus' had many friends? *
By the end of the story, who did Zacchaeus want to be more like? *
GREAT JOB!  Zacchaeus, who was a tax collector, was known for being a dishonest man, who had no friends.  Zacchaeus' encounter with Jesus led to great change in his life.  He gave up his dishonest ways and did his best to make up for all he had done wrong by agreeing to give half of his wealth to the poor.

This change came about because Jesus befriended him.  By sharing a meal and eating together, Zacchaeus became a changed man.  He realized that he wanted to become more like his new friend, Jesus.
JESUS FEEDS A GREAT CROWD: Now we are going to learn about another meal that Jesus shared, only this one is with a lot more people. For this story, you will also need more people. Take a moment to get your Mom, Dad, brothers or sisters involved in playing the different parts in this story. Have them help you to act it out. If no one is available, it is fine to read it on your own. When you are done reading pages 2 and 3, go to your sticker page and find the basket of bread and fishes and place it in the appropriate spot. Then proceed to the questions below.
What did Jesus feel for the people who came to see him? *
Did Jesus want his disciples to buy more food? *
Who did Jesus trust to feed all these people? *
How many people did Jesus feed? *
How many baskets of food were left over when they finished eating? *
FANTASTIC: Jesus showed his love for the people when he didn't want to send them away hungry. He trusted in God, his Father, to provide for them when they only had five loaves and two fishes to feed 5,000 people.

The story of the multiplication of loaves and fishes is a story in which Jesus gives his disciples an example. He wants them to nourish all who come to them, even crowds. He promises abundant nourishment. In the miracle story, Jesus takes the loaves, thanks God for them, and gives them to the gathered people. These are like the actions the priest does at every Eucharist, the celebration in which we gather to eat with Jesus at every Mass.
EATING TOGETHER IS A WAY OF MAKING FRIENDS: So, think about all the special meals you have had in your life. Think about birthday meals, Thanksgiving meals, Christmas, and Easter meals. Why are these meals so special?

If you said because it is a time to share food and stories with one another. To be together as a family. You would be right. This was also the way that Jesus shared with his followers. When Jesus was growing up in a Jewish family, they blessed bread and wine at every Sabbath meal.

And we do the same thing at Mass. We bless the bread and wine during the part of the Mass known as the "Liturgy of the Eucharist" . And then we share a meal as Jesus taught us. Take a couple of minutes to read page 4 of your lesson. When you are done reading, go to your sticker page and find the chalice and hosts and place them in the appropriate spot. Then proceed to the questions below.
At what meal did Jesus and his family bless the wine and the bread? *
When does our community come together to share a meal and bless the bread and the wine? *
YOU ARE DOING A SUPER JOB! God always wants you to feel loved. And when we receive Jesus in the Eucharist this is a special moment of God's love. Receiving the Eucharist is the high point of the Mass. It is when God feeds us the ultimate food for the soul. The Eucharist is food for the soul. Receiving Holy Communion is an incredible gift that we should never take for granted.

So, let's take a moment to read over the "Liturgy of the Eucharist" document which you will find attached to this lesson, to understand more fully what happens during the "Liturgy of the Eucharist." When you are done complete the "Eucharist Word Find" document to see how many words related to the "Liturgy of the Eucharist" you can find. Don’t forget to send me a picture so I can see how well you did!
How many words did you find? *
CLOSING: Excellent job! Now it is time to close out your lesson.  Gather with your Mom and/or Dad and read through the "Our Parish Church" prayer pictured below.   This document is attached to the lesson.

When you gather to do this prayer, think about how Jesus gathered people together and how we gather together as a community at church to worship God.
SUPER GREAT JOB! You are continuing your sacramental prep journey and are doing a great job. I want you to remember that the Eucharist is the center of our lives!  The Sacrament of the Eucharist unites us with Jesus Christ and to one another. Don't forget to place your Lesson 3 sticker on page 4 of your lesson to show that you have completed the work! We will continue to learn more about this celebration as we continue our lessons!
