Thank you for your interest in the Mental Health Peer Advocate (MHPA) program!
What is a Mental Health Peer Advocate?
Mental Health Peer Advocates (MHPAs) are the promoters, representatives, and peer support agents of the University of Kentucky Counseling Center (UKCC). MHPA's are committed to the destigmatization of Mental Health and are liaisons between the University of Kentucky student community and the UKCC. MHPAs also inform the student body about common mental health issues that impact college students and communicate the services provided by the Counseling Center to help prevent, reduce, and manage those threats.
What are MHPAs Responsibilities?
Accepted applicants will be responsible for developing and executing outreach programs and presentations that will:
•
Promote emotional well-being among the student body
•
Raise awareness regarding college mental health issues
•
Provide education and resources related to psychological and emotional well-being
•
Increase awareness among students about services available to them
•
Provide a link between the counseling center and student body
•
Promote a climate of inclusivity and belonging
Activities that MHPAs will be involved in include: Mental health screening events, WellKentucky events, general tabling events, UKCC Relaxation Room, UKCC social media, engagement with Stressbusters app, promotion of UKCC services, UKCC Services 101 workshop, and creation of additional programming.
Who can be a Mental Health Peer Advocate?
Students from all majors/departments with a passion for mental health are invited to apply to the MHPA program. We invite all students who are interested to apply, regardless of Counseling Center client status. Applicants should have a general understanding and knowledge base about mental health issues specifically as it pertains to college age students.
What is the Mental Health Peer Advocate time commitment?
Applicants must be available Wednesdays from 3-4pm in the Fall 2021 semester for weekly meetings!
Members should expect to allocate a minimum of 3-5 hours a week to MHPA-related activities (this includes general body meetings which occur once a week).
*MHPAs may receive internship credit through their department [course 399] or the career center [course 396] such that 1 credit hour= 3-4 hours/week, 2 credit hours=6-7 hours/week, 3 credit hours=9-10 hours/week, 6 credit hours=20 hours/week. MHPA’s will be responsible for finding a faculty sponsor in their department for internship credit.
