The Empire State After-School Program offers enrichment and academic opportunities for middle and high school scholars in an after-school setting within the Newburgh Enlarged City School District.
The program offers scholars the opportunity to work with and talk to teachers and peers in a small group setting. The program provides opportunities for scholars to learn a new skill or engage in a new activity based on their interests. The program also provides academic enrichment and programs, activities, and services to enhance the growth and development of our scholars and families. The program focuses on the academic improvement, social and emotional learning, enrichment opportunities, and the health and well-being of our secondary scholars.
Empire is available to scholars in grades 6 - 12 attending the following schools: Meadow Hill Global Explorations Magnet School, Temple Hill Academy, Heritage Middle School, South Middle School, Newburgh Free Academy Main, Newburgh Free Academy North, and Newburgh Free Academy West.
All secondary schools will offer programs in-person on Tuesday and Thursday for 1.5 hours each day. Virtual programming options, including academic enrichment, may be offered in the future. There also may be opportunities for programs on Saturdays, including Regents Review sessions and enrichment programs.
Unfortunately, due to the national bus driver shortage, transportation for scholars participating in Empire is currently unavailable. In-person programming for scholars who have their own transportation is anticipated to begin on November 16, 2021. If this date changes, information will be provided as soon as possible.
Information regarding a virtual option for scholars who rely on transportation will be provided once if it is approved by the grant and the district.
For the 2021 - 2022 school year, the Empire State After-School Program will offer three sessions:
★ Fall Session: November 16, 2021 - December 16, 2021
★ Winter Session: January 11, 2022 - February 10, 2022
★ Spring Session: March 1, 2022 - March 31, 2022 and April 19, 2022 - May 26, 2022
In-person programs will begin immediately after regular dismissal time and an after school snack will be available. Virtual programs (if approved) will begin one hour after regular dismissal time to allow for all scholars to leave campus and have the opportunity to participate.
The application for the Empire State After-School Program includes demographic information, information regarding policies and procedures, including selection policy, attendance policy, transportation information (if available), behavior and discipline policies; and anticipated program offerings at each campus and an opportunity for scholars to select his/her top program choices. There also may be field trips and guest speakers offered through the program.
Please answer all of the applicable questions so we can work to provide a successful program for our scholars.
Section 1 must be completed for all scholars (regardless of school and grade level). To apply for a specific program, please go to the appropriate section for your school.
Placement in a program is based on enrollment, the availability of required staff and appropriate funding. Program placement will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. If your scholar is enrolled in the program, you will receive a welcome email and additional information. Submitting the application does NOT guarantee placement in the program.
Thank you so much for your interest and for taking the time to apply to the Empire State After-School Program.
