Description:  Over the past few decades, the field of Speech-Language Pathology has expanded to reach more populations and those with greater linguistic diversity.  Yet, too often what is considered to be the accepted way to identify a language-based disability is based on the administration of standardized tests.  These tests regularly fail to tease out disability from language differences or lack of prior knowledge of the contrent assumed by the test leading to over - and under-identification of students due to implicit biases in assessment practices.  Skills evaluated by these tests are often more associated with culture or socioeconomic status.  Fortunately, a significant area of research has developed that guides evaluators to move beyond standarized tests that primarily focus on morphology ad vocabulary.  Clinicians must learn new assessment skills includin on elicitation and analysis of language samples, dynamic assessment, and non-word repetition tasks.  In this talk, participants acquire an understanding of that research and how to apply the research to their evaluations thereby increasing the accuracy of their evaluations.  Videos of case studies are used for analysis so participants acquire skills to apply to their next evaluation.
