AVID Class Description:
AVID is an elective class for students who are serious about succeeding in junior high, high school, and college. Our goal is to provide students with the support to thrive in any curriculum and course they desire to take through developing and practicing useful academic skills. The class is composed of class-work led by the AVID teacher and tutorial groups led by high school tutors. AVID methodologies focus on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading.

Several benefits await prospective AVID students. AVID is a “class community” composed of peers, teachers and tutors geared towards encouraging academic and personal success. We have created an encouraging community environment to allow a consistent source of support for all years of junior high and high school.  AVID teachers coach students through course selection, high stakes test preparation, and college applications.

Who is well-suited for AVID?
You work well with others.
You have a positive attitude in school.
You do your homework.
You want to challenge yourself.
You are willing to try different methods for learning and keeping track of assignments.
You want to understand class material (math, English, science, history, etc.) more thoroughly.
You may not have support at home for academic and college planning.
You would earn better grades with more support – in learning methods and organization.
You would enjoy being a part of a mini-community in school.

Who is not well-suited for AVID?
This class is not for you if you prefer to work alone, don't plan to go to a 4-year college, don't take learning seriously, or repeatedly miss class assignments.  This is not a course for remedial or at-risk students; it is not intended to be a last resort for students who are failing courses.
