William Paul Thomas has developed an ongoing series of enigmatic oil and acrylic portraits featuring a variety of Black men from his social circle. Most of the men in the artworks are not blood relatives. One of the primary themes of this project is to challenge viewers and the artist himself to consider the barriers that limit our compassion for strangers. Thomas will present a talk centered on that project and open up a discussion about the need to cultivate a deeper sense of empathy for the people in our lives outside of our immediate family.
