WORKSHOP: SOUNDS QUEER?
WED & TUE 09-10.10  //  SPÓŁDZIELNIA OGNIWO  //  12:00 - 16:00

Sounds weird? What does queer sound like? What can queer approach to sound mean?
Zosia Hołubowska from Oramics and Jagoda Wójcik from Pvssymantra invite us to discuss, experiment and explore queer soundscapes at a workshop that employs our bodies, computers, recorders and contact mikes to create music. Femmes, queers, non-binary and trans people are invited to work on a communal experience resulting in a pop-up exhibition open to all.

1st DAY:
During the meeting we will listen, read, talk but above all experiment with sound. We will start with a discussion about queer sound, and then we will try to create something that will reflect our interpretations using bodies as well as various electronic devices, computers, recorders, contact microphones and sound junk objects. The impulse to create the workshop was a quote from an article by Airek Beauchamp: queer bodies create queer sound. Therefore, we will focus on creating sound material converting our body movement or the activity of our muscles into sound. Data from electrodes examining the electrical activity of our muscles will be translated through the MIDI protocol and Teensa into sound. These signals will be used to record first samples and then process them via Ableton Live. In the next part of the workshop, we will construct our own theremin equipped with a photoresistors. Through building specific instrument each participant becomes the creator of a collective spatial composition. Combined experiments on the light form incline to the generation of communal "tissue”-becoming a form of installation in the space of the audosphere.

2nd  DAY:
We will start with preparing sound elements of the installation. Through Adafruit sensors and soundbars we will collectively plan and build our installation. Together, we will compose samples and design an interactive environment that will resemble a sound maze. The workshop aim is to create an interactive sound installation that will symbolically give voice to queer people and those with experience of being a woman. Classes will end with the opening of the exhibition to the public.

NOTICE: Workshop is free to attend, but capacity is limited. Please fill out the form below if you'd like to attend, and we'll confirm with you after the deadline. We encourage to bring to workshop a computer with Ableton Live Trial installed as well as your own instruments and devices. No prior knowledge required!
