Log Rolling Contest
Tell me about balance with movement in the log rolling contest"
Tell me about your strangest dreams:
Setting up the Catch (even his elbow is too low for my taste)
People want to pull as quickly as possible to try to go fast.  Why do we actually NOT want to pull right away and what should we do instead?
Remember: the elbow only bends one direction, you have to put it in a place where it CAN bend your forearm down.  Why does flattening out your body and lifting your elbow to the outside help you get your elbow up before you pull?
Here is Caite Schaffel, age 9.  The upper arm is parallel to the surface of the water, the elbow is about an inch below the surface when her hand drops all the way down.  THEN she pulls.
Here's a video of her (and then Parker Macho) showing that the first thing we want to do is LIFT THE ELBOW (NOT drop the arm).  After you lift the elbow to the surface, your hand and forearm should be facing backwards  and THEN you can push  against the water to climb forward.
Scarlet Martin's Slow Motion Fly Catch:  Notice that before she pulls she raises her elbows up to the surface of the water. Ypress, Elbows Up, THEN pull.
Scarlet's Fly frozen at the catch. She lifts her elbows up to about an inch below the surface of the water and THEN pulls.
Let's review the Early Vertical Forearm (you can stop this video when he starts talking about equipment, about the 7 minute mark)
Why is the high elbow "early vertical forearm" both faster AND healthier for your body?
On the entry, the elbow should be higher than the wrist which should be higher than the fingertips.  About how far in front of you should your fingertips start touching the water for entry?
Why is it important to press with your fingertips after you extend instead of just starting to drop your whole arm down further at the top of your stroke?
If you were reaching over a log, where on your arm would that log be touching your arm as you reached over it?
This guy is demonstrating this move while standing up and doing the move in front of him, out from his chest.  If you were swimming, where would your arm be in relation to your body for this move?
Clear selection
Why is it necessary to move your catch a little outside of your shoulder? (Remember, the elbow only bends on direction, how can we make the forearm go DOWN at the elbow?)
What are some exercises you can do out of the water that would help you patterns this move IN the water?
Tell me about rotating your elbow to the outside and why Megan thinks that's a very, very, very important move to understand and be able to do quickly at the top of your stroke?
Why does Megan not like the catch-up drill?  (Although I agree it will help you move one arm at a time and balance with one arm always at length out in front of you)
Why would fist drill help you find your early vertical forearm and a high elbow?
What drills do we do that are designed to help you create a high elbow catch?
Sheila talking about the Catch with "tubing"
Describe the "attention" stance of her arms:  (Note that Megan will want your back parallel to the ground, your shoulder blades engaged, and your upper arms in a straight flat line from your ribs out your shoulder and to your elbow.  When you come over to swim, ask her to show you on her set of tubing.)
What check point #1?
What is checkpoint #2?
What is checkpoint #3 and how can you check for that?
After the 3 technique checkpoints, how far back should you pull and how does this relate to how far back you should pull in your freestyle stroke?  Why should you stop pulling backwards when there's still a little more you can do?
This is Diggory demonstrating how I want tubing pulls to be done.  He sets his forearms vertical without moving (without dropping) his elbows, and THEN pulls back.
And here is the exact same motion underwater where his elbow and upper arm stays up close to the surface as he creates his early vertical forearm and THEN turns his body for the push.
Describe to me what you want to see in your own pull when filmed underwater and what you've seen before now:
