UNLV Fostering Scholars Program survey 2023-2024
The UNLV Fostering Scholars Program provides scholarships, additional supports & experiences to UNLV students who have experienced foster care at age 13-years-old or after. To better understand what you wish to gain out of your time at UNLV and the individualized supports of UNLV Fostering Scholars, we ask that you complete the following brief survey so that we may customize our services to best suit your needs. By completing this short survey, you also assist us in identifying any urgent issues that you may be encountering so that we may expedite helping you navigate any urgent issues.

Due to the individualized support services and financial resources that the UNLV Fostering Scholars Program provides to students, we require that students commit to checking in with their assigned Fostering Scholars Program coach at a minimum of three times a semester, but recommend more frequent check-ins. If you are doing the minimum check ins, they must be in person. Additional meetings may be virtual or by phone - so long as the student is not in an active crisis, is meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP), is passing all classes, and all needs can be met virtually.

Participation in the program is completely voluntary and a student may opt-out of the UNLV Fostering Scholars Program at any time; however, if minimum participation is not met (attendance at 3 events & 3 coaching sessions per semester), the scholarship may not be issued and students will be considered a student service recipient rather than a program participant.

Mission:
The UNLV Fostering Scholars program strives to support college students who have previously experienced foster care, at age 13 and later, during their transition to university life and throughout their time at UNLV. The program aims to create an inclusive, supportive, and welcoming environment for our participants. The UNLV Fostering Scholars program enhances a student's sense of independence, community, and connectedness. Through these outcomes, retention and graduation rates of participants have been demonstrated to drastically improve over the state and national average of the same population. The goal of the UNLV Fostering Scholars program is to ensure students have the opportunities, skills, and tools necessary to transform their university experience into a meaningful career which will last them a lifetime.

In order to be eligible for the Fostering Scholars Scholarship and textbook assistance, we ask that students commit to a regular "check-in" with the Program Coordinator or a Fostering Success Coach with the UNLV Fostering Scholars team a minimum of three times per semester and participation in three events per semester (more will be offered & make-up sessions can be offered at a coach's discretion).

Check-ins may be virtual with their success coach if transportation is an issue, so long as the student is not in an active crisis, is not failing their classes, or on Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) financial aid probation. Is this something that you are willing to consider in order to access the financial and priority benefits of the program?
