Dear sir/madam
I, Mr Busisani Sibiya, a student at the
University of Johannesburg, am undertaking a research project as part of my PhD.
studies to understand individuals contributing towards their extended families (hereafter
black tax benefactors). For purposes of this questionnaire, extended family
includes parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings and cousins. This would
basically be any family member other than yourself, spouse and children.
The study aims to better understand black tax
benefactors. Black tax is defined as the assistance offered by young
professionals (of all races) to their extended families. The kind of assistance
offered is mostly, but not limited to financial. This may include paying rent
for extended family, buying groceries, paying siblings’ school fees,
accommodating extended family members in your home, amongst other things.
Better understanding black tax benefactors is
done by attempting to profile these individuals, their background,
circumstances, conditions and feelings towards black tax. Through this questionnaire, similar
characteristics of the benefactors will be drawn and used to determine their
profile.
To this end, we kindly request that you
complete the following short questionnaire regarding the form of assistance you
are affording your extended family and the impact this has on you financially,
emotionally and psychologically. This should take no longer than 7 minutes of
your time. Although your response is of the utmost importance to us, your participation
in this survey is entirely voluntary.
Please do not enter your name or contact
details on the questionnaire as it remains anonymous. Information you provide
remains confidential and will be reported in summary format only.
